“We have to stay together you know/
Because everyone else is falling apart“
Matthew Murphy’s wife’s voice note opens up the first track of his brand new album “Life is a Killer” the second album with his solo project, Love Fame Tragedy. It’s a unique way to open up the album and its message sets the tone for the rest of the record. A theme of navigating the difficulties of marriage, personal anxieties and allowing self doubt to creep into your thoughts, are all reoccurring subjects mentioned in the tracks.
Murphy’s lyrical excellence shine’s through in each song, with him being able to tell a story in each track and making it a joy to listen to. Lyrics highlights include:
“I do things I can’t explain
I drugged your cat and then I flew to Spain“
Taken from ‘Don’t You Want to Sleep with Someone Normal?’.
“Crown me king of distraction
Crown you queen of reaction“
Taken from ‘If You Don’t.
With my favourite lyrics of the album:
‘I can hear us in every mediocre song
And I can see us in every impulse I act on“
Taken from ‘Slipping Away’.
My favourite tracks are ‘Slipping Away’ which features a heavy distorted riff, great vocals and a sexy beat makes it one of my top played and “My Head’s In A Hurricane” which is softer, with synth sounds glistening in my ears when I listen to it. It’s a no-skip album and I think the more I listen to it the more i’ll change my mind on which tracks are my favourite. My only issue is the album isn’t long enough with the whole duration only being 35 minutes long.
It’s worth noting “Life is a Killer” also features top producers Mark Crew (Bastille) , Jacknife Lee (U2, REM, The Wombats) and Dan Priddy (Bastille, Rag’N’Bone Man).
Love Fame Tragedy go on tour next month so make sure to get tickets! You can buy tickets here but hurry as tickets are selling fast, with some venues showing as limited.
I’m so glad Love Fame Tragedy’s second album has lived up to it’s expectations of featuring top indie hits which are full of catchy guitar riffs and lyrics that you’re guaranteed to be singing all summer.
Let me know what you think of the album and if you’re going to see Love Fame Tragedy live.
