Will Young Light It Up Tour at Crewe Lyceum

Like many millennial adults I have many memories of Will Young’s music growing up as a child, however my favourite memory of his music comes from my mum. When I got married a few years ago I asked everyone to recommend a song for the wedding breakfast and my mum chose Will’s song “Leave Right Now”. I couldn’t work out if this was her subtle way of telling me not to marry my husband or she was sending him a message about me. She got her way and the song was played at our wedding breakfast, confusing our guests as to why a break up song was belting out over the speakers but it made me and her both laugh so I’m glad I kept it in the playlist. Skip to present day when me and my mum saw that Will Young was going on tour and we both knew we had to go.

The ‘Light It Up’ tour sees Will playing a 50 date sold out tour (I’m certain it’s sold out but you can check on his website here), going around many UK towns and cities playing his hits in an acoustic setting with him and his pianist Christian. I’m so glad he had decided to do a stripped back music set. His songs are beautiful and his voice demands to be heard so hearing it in an acoustic setting with only a piano to accompany his voice felt really special.
Will and Christian played many of Will’s many hits, tracks from his covers album “Crying on The Bathroom Floor”, his latest tracks off his newest album “Light It Up” and then a blend of medleys that incorporated many of his hit songs before finishing with the big hits such as “Evergreen”, “All Time Love” and finally “Leave Right Now”. In between the tracks Will answered questions from fans that had been sent in and it was brilliant to hear his stories and his witty jokes. As Will had said on the night he’s had over two decades in the music business and it shows. He looked at ease on the stage, his voice sounded effortlessly pitch perfect and the connection with him and his pianist with their musical cue’s and conversations presented a really intimate evening of hearing Will’s discography. Plus Will was very funny and had great banter with the audience.

As I mentioned before I’m not sure if there are anymore tickets left for this acoustic tour but let it be a reminder for you to make sure to see him on his next as Will is so talented at what he does and it was such a joy to go through memory lane hearing his hits old and new, even if it did remind me of my mums unusual song choice on my wedding day.

Great evening at Crewe’s Lyceum Theatre. Lovely set and love Will’s banter. Also enjoyed the lovely Casey MC Quillen who came all the way from Boston to support Will. We met her after the performance and she was lovely.
